How We Measure Quality
Our data quality scoring is based on five key dimensions, each weighted according to its importance for reliable commodity price data:
Completeness
25% weightMeasures whether we collected all expected data points for the reporting period based on the commodity's update frequency.
Accuracy
25% weightDetects statistical outliers using Z-score analysis and validates prices against expected ranges for each commodity.
Timeliness
20% weightEvaluates how fresh our data is by measuring the gap between expected and actual update times.
Consistency
15% weightMeasures regularity in data collection patterns by analyzing the variance in time gaps between updates.
Uniqueness
15% weightVerifies data freshness by tracking the ratio of unique values, helping detect stale or duplicated data.
Grading Scale
A+ to FA+ (97-100), A (93-96), A- (90-92), B+ (87-89), B (83-86), B- (80-82), C (70-79), D (60-69), F (0-59)
How We Calculate Scores
The overall score is a weighted average of all five quality dimensions:
Example Calculation
Go-Forward Score: For New & Limited-History Commodities
For commodities with limited historical data (below 50% completeness), we calculate a "go-forward" score that focuses on the quality of data collection patterns rather than historical volume.
Why Two Scores?
- New commodities shouldn't be penalized for lack of history
- Shows the quality of our data collection process
- Predicts future quality as data accumulates
Go-Forward Weights
History Status Indicators: Complete (≥80% completeness) • Building (50-79%) • Limited (<50%, shows go-forward score)

Data Sources
We aggregate data from multiple authoritative sources to ensure reliability:
- Major financial data providers
- Government energy agencies (EIA, IEA)
- Commodity exchanges (CME, ICE)
- Industry benchmarks and indices
- Real-time trading platforms
Cross-validation across sources ensures data accuracy and helps detect anomalies.
