Why GCC Fuel Prices Are Unique

Government-Set Monthly Prices

Unlike market-driven pricing in the US and Europe, GCC governments announce new pump prices on the first of each month. This gives fleets and businesses 30 days of price certainty.

Subsidized vs. Market-Linked

UAE deregulated in 2015 and links prices to global markets. Kuwait and Bahrain maintain heavy subsidies. Saudi Arabia partially reformed in 2016-2018. This creates wide price variation across just 6 neighboring countries.

Multiple Octane Grades

GCC countries typically offer 91 and 95 octane (or 95 and 98). The 91-octane grade is typically the lowest-cost option for everyday vehicles, while 95+ is for performance and newer engines.

Currency Note

AED, SAR, and QAR are all pegged to the USD at fixed rates (3.675, 3.75, and 3.64 respectively). Oman (OMR), Bahrain (BHD), and Kuwait (KWD) also peg to USD. This makes GCC fuel prices extremely stable in USD terms.
