Dubai crude is the principal price reference for medium sour crude oil moving from the Middle East Gulf to Asia - the East of Suez market. Most Gulf producers price their term sales to Asia off Dubai-linked benchmarks, which makes Dubai the third leg of the global crude triangle alongside Brent and WTI. It differs from both in quality and in market structure, and those differences are the reason it exists as a separate benchmark.

Why a third benchmark exists

Brent and WTI are light, sweet crudes: low density, low sulfur. The barrels that dominate eastbound Gulf exports are medium gravity and sour - higher sulfur, requiring different refinery configurations. A light sweet benchmark misprices them, particularly when the light-heavy spread moves. Dubai, as a freely traded medium sour grade, prices what Asian refiners actually buy. The Brent-Dubai spread is consequently a traded signal of the sweet-sour differential and of east-west arbitrage economics.

Official selling prices and their methodology

Gulf producers issue monthly official selling prices - OSPs - expressed as differentials to benchmark references. Oman's OSP, relevant to the Dubai complex through the Oman contract on the Gulf Mercantile Exchange, illustrates a documentation problem we have measured directly: public sources disagree on whether the monthly value is struck as an arithmetic or a volume-weighted average of the daily marker, and at the time we checked, the primary official pages that would settle the question were unavailable. We record that methodology as unverified rather than asserting either answer.

The general property: for OTC and officially administered prices, methodology documentation can be inconsistent or unreachable, and secondary sources copy each other. Where the authoritative answer cannot be obtained, stating the uncertainty is more useful than manufacturing confidence. A number whose construction is ambiguous should be handled as such in any model that consumes it.

Reading Dubai against Brent and WTI

A narrowing Brent-Dubai spread makes Atlantic-basin crude competitive in Asia and typically accompanies strength in sour grades or weakness in sweet; a widening spread pushes Asian buyers back toward Gulf barrels. Because Dubai prices a different quality class, comparing Dubai directly to WTI conflates two effects - geography and quality - and the pairwise spreads are more interpretable: Brent-WTI for Atlantic geography, Brent-Dubai for the sweet-sour axis.

Dubai Crude Oil FAQ

Is Dubai crude actually from Dubai?

Production of the original Dubai grade has declined for decades; the benchmark endures because its assessment mechanism admits delivery of other Gulf grades, keeping it liquid enough to price the medium sour class. The name refers to the pricing mechanism, not a currently dominant production stream.

Why does Dubai trade below Brent most of the time?

Quality. Sour crude requires more refining investment to meet fuel specifications, so it generally prices below sweet grades. The size of that discount moves with refinery economics and the relative supply of each class; the spread is itself a signal traders watch.
