JKM - the Japan-Korea Marker - is the price reference for spot liquefied natural gas delivered into Northeast Asia. The name properly belongs to a daily assessment published by S&P Global Commodity Insights (Platts) for cargoes delivered ex-ship into Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan. What trades on exchanges, and what this page serves, is the ICE futures contract that settles financially against the monthly average of those assessments. The distinction has a visible consequence in the data, described below.

What this series is - and the roll step

This page serves the front-month ICE JKM futures value from a single collection source. Each JKM contract ceases trading around the fifteenth of the month before delivery; a series that always follows the front month therefore switches contracts mid-month. When the curve is steep, that switch appears as a discontinuous step that is a change of instrument, not a market move. In our own series we have measured roll steps of +18.6% (2026-07-16) and -17.8% (2026-04-16).

Method note: this series was at one time described on this site as a spot assessment. It is not - it is a front-month futures value, and the mid-month steps are the fingerprint. The label was corrected, and the steps are documented here rather than smoothed away: a stitched front-month series that hides its rolls misleads more subtly than one that shows them.

JKM among the three regional benchmarks

Global gas pricing rests on three regional references: Henry Hub for the North American pipeline market, TTF for Europe, and JKM for Northeast Asian LNG. JKM typically prices above the other two because a delivered LNG cargo embeds liquefaction and shipping on top of the feed gas. The JKM-TTF spread steers flexible Atlantic cargoes east or west; the JKM-Henry Hub spread frames the full US-export arbitrage.

Reading this series responsibly

Treat month-boundary discontinuities near mid-month as roll artifacts unless corroborated by TTF and Henry Hub moving similarly. For month-over-month analysis, per-contract series avoid the artifact entirely. As a single-source series updated on the order of once per trading day, this value is suited to daily-resolution analysis rather than intraday work.

JKM LNG FAQ

Is JKM a spot price or a futures price?

The JKM assessment published by S&P Global Commodity Insights is a spot price for delivered cargoes. What this page serves is the front-month ICE futures contract that settles against the monthly average of those assessments. The two are tightly linked but not identical, and the futures series steps at each mid-month contract roll.

Why did the JKM price jump nearly 20% in a single day?

Almost certainly a contract roll rather than a market event. The front-month contract changes around the fifteenth of each month; when later months trade far from the expiring one, the series steps by the difference. We have measured steps of about 18% in both directions at rolls. Check whether the date is mid-month and whether TTF moved comparably before reading it as news.

Why does JKM trade above Henry Hub?

A JKM cargo is delivered LNG: the price embeds liquefaction and ocean freight on top of the gas itself. Henry Hub prices pipeline gas at a domestic US hub. The spread between them, net of those costs, is the economics of US LNG export.
