Would joined flaring authorization and observation data replace manual compliance research?

A measured demand probe for a well- and operator-level dataset joining regulatory flare/vent exceptions, reported volumes, and satellite observations. This is research, not an available OilPriceAPI product.

Who this tests: Methane and ESG software teams, lenders, insurers, operators, researchers, and county or state analysts who reconcile what was authorized, reported, and observed.

Demand evidence so far

  • Keywords Everywhere, United States, 2026-09-02: “oil and gas flaring” 170 estimated searches/month and “flaring data” 30/month; Texas- and Permian-specific terms were 10/month each.
  • Exa surfaced active open-source work joining VIIRS observations with regulator well and production records, validating that the normalization job is real even though exact API-intent search volume is small.
  • Production API logs did not contain a attributable flaring-series request in the latest daily refused-demand ledger, so this probe must not be promoted as customer-proven demand.

Smallest useful dataset

  • Flare/vent exception application, authorization period, permitted volume, operator, lease, and API number where supplied.
  • Monthly reported flared or vented volumes with source period and revision provenance.
  • Satellite observation cluster, estimated volume, confidence, and well-pad/operator match method.
  • Explicit unmatched and ambiguous records instead of silent operator attribution.

Primary metric

Human-reviewed workflow-evidence submissions per 100 consented experiment exposures; PostHog measures the submission and the operational inbox records the evidence needed to classify it.

Continue when

  • At least five qualified workflow conversations, including two teams that currently join two or more source classes manually.
  • At least two design partners provide representative reconciliation cases and accept a bounded sample evaluation.
  • A source probe reaches at least 95% audited field accuracy for one state without hiding ambiguous matches.

Stop or redesign when

  • × Interest is primarily educational and no buyer has a recurring authorization-versus-observation workflow.
  • × Required attribution or licensing cannot support the target workflow at viable cost.
