Understanding Eagle Ford Shale

The Eagle Ford is an Upper Cretaceous marine formation that arcs across South Texas. Its hydrocarbon window changes from oil in the northwest through condensate and wet gas to dry gas toward the southeast. The neighboring Austin Chalk and Buda intervals can appear in the same development corridor, but they are geologically distinct targets and should not be merged automatically in well-level analysis.

Proximity to Gulf Coast refineries, petrochemical plants and export terminals gives the play a different logistics profile from inland basins. County, landing zone and fluid mix are essential filters because a single basin-wide production number spans several commercial regimes. Permit activity can therefore shift within the Eagle Ford even when the regional total changes only modestly.
