EIA combines Marcellus and Utica output into its Appalachia series; the regional total is not presented as Marcellus production.

Understanding Marcellus Shale
The Middle Devonian Marcellus is an organic-rich shale extending beneath large parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and New York. Its most productive development corridors combine thick, thermally mature rock with access to gathering and transmission infrastructure. Upper Devonian intervals may be developed in the same region, but they should remain separately identified in formation-level datasets.
Pipeline capacity, regional basis prices and state permitting rules are especially important when interpreting Marcellus activity. EIA combines Marcellus and Utica output into an Appalachia production series, so the regional total cannot honestly be labeled as Marcellus alone. This page preserves the play-specific geography and formation context without duplicating the Appalachia number.
