Understanding Utica Shale

The Utica and its Point Pleasant interval form a deep Ordovician petroleum system beneath much of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Development has been strongest in eastern Ohio and adjacent areas, with production ranging from dry gas to liquids-rich gas depending on depth and thermal maturity. Although it shares surface geography with the Marcellus, the Utica is older, deeper and operationally distinct.

EIA reports the modern Appalachian region as an aggregate rather than publishing a standalone Utica production series. Assigning the full regional total to this page would double-count the same gas on the Marcellus and Appalachian pages. Utica analysis is therefore better grounded in formation-specific wells, permits and state records until a current federal series isolates the play.
