Niobrara / DJ Basin

The Niobrara is a Cretaceous chalk and marl interval developed across parts of the Rocky Mountain region. The best-known activity lies in the Denver-Julesburg Basin of northeastern Colorado, where Niobrara benches and the underlying Codell sandstone are common horizontal targets. The formation extends beyond the DJ Basin, so “Niobrara” and “DJ Basin” are related but not perfectly interchangeable geographic labels.

Urban and agricultural surface use, Colorado spacing rules and gathering infrastructure shape development alongside subsurface quality. EIA tight-oil and shale-gas series provide a Niobrara-level production view, while discontinued DPR well-count series do not. Keeping those source boundaries explicit avoids attaching national rig totals or stale well inventories to this basin.
