Piceance Basin
The Piceance Basin in western Colorado is a significant natural gas producing region.
EIA does not publish a current Piceance production series. Colorado totals are intentionally not used as a basin proxy.
We leave the measurement absent instead of substituting a broader geography or an estimated zero. The basin geography, geology, operators, formations and related-basin references below remain available.
Understanding Piceance Basin
The Piceance Basin lies in western Colorado and contains a thick Rocky Mountain sedimentary section. Tight-gas development has focused on Mesaverde Group intervals such as the Williams Fork, while the Mancos provides a separate shale target. Depth, pressure and stacked sandstone geometry vary across the basin, making formation-level identification important when comparing wells.
Piceance production is only one component of Colorado output; statewide totals also include the Denver-Julesburg Basin and other areas. EIA does not currently publish a Piceance-specific production series in STEO, so this page does not relabel Colorado oil or gas as basin production. Operator and formation information remains useful for interpreting permits and state production records.
