Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil is the residual marine fuel that became the default bunker grade when the IMO 2020 global sulphur cap of 0.50% took effect on 1 January 2020. This page tracks the Singapore VLSFO benchmark, quoted in US dollars per metric ton.
What VLSFO is and who burns it
VLSFO is a blended residual fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.50% by mass. Vessels without exhaust-gas scrubbers must burn it, or a distillate such as marine gas oil, to comply with MARPOL Annex VI outside emission control areas.
Because most of the world fleet sails without scrubbers, VLSFO is the largest bunker grade by volume and the price most charterers and operators benchmark fuel costs against.
Why Singapore is the reference
Singapore is the largest bunkering port in the world by sales volume, and its delivered VLSFO price is the most widely quoted single bunker figure. The port page shows the delivered assessment alongside MGO and HFO 380; this page shows the benchmark series behind it.
The spread between VLSFO and high-sulphur fuel oil is the economic case for installing a scrubber, and the spread between VLSFO and MGO is the cost of switching to distillate when a vessel enters an emission control area.

VLSFO Marine Fuel FAQ
How is VLSFO different from HFO 380?
HFO 380 is high-sulphur residual fuel, typically around 3.5% sulphur, and can only be burned by vessels fitted with scrubbers. VLSFO is capped at 0.50% sulphur and is compliant without abatement equipment.
Is the VLSFO price on this page a port price or a benchmark?
A benchmark. Port-specific delivered prices for Singapore, Rotterdam, Fujairah, Houston and other ports are on the marine fuel port pages and in the /v1/prices/marine-fuels endpoint.
What unit is VLSFO quoted in?
US dollars per metric ton. Bunker fuel is sold by mass, not by barrel, because residual fuel density varies between blends.
