Understanding Austin Chalk
The Upper Cretaceous Austin Chalk is a fractured carbonate interval extending across parts of Texas into Louisiana. Production depends heavily on natural fracture networks and local structure, and the formation has experienced several development cycles using vertical, horizontal and modern completion techniques. It commonly overlies the Eagle Ford, but production from the two targets should remain separately classified.
The formation crosses multiple basins and state reporting areas, which makes a statewide or Eagle Ford total unsuitable as an Austin Chalk measurement. EIA does not publish a current formation-specific production series. Formation-tagged permits and well records are therefore more defensible sources for local activity than a manufactured play total.
