Understanding Fayetteville Shale
The Mississippian Fayetteville Shale extends across north-central Arkansas on the northern side of the Arkoma Basin. It is primarily a dry-gas reservoir and was developed extensively with horizontal wells and hydraulic fracturing. Rock properties, depth and structural setting change across the play, while nearby conventional Arkoma reservoirs belong to a broader and more geologically varied system.
Fayetteville development has slowed from its peak, making source dates especially important when using production figures. EIA retains a Fayetteville-specific shale-gas series, which supports an honest gas measurement for this page. No corresponding basin oil series or current DPR well-count series is inferred, and Arkansas-wide totals are not substituted.
