Understanding Woodford Shale
The Devonian-Mississippian Woodford is an organic-rich source rock developed across several Oklahoma geologic settings, including the Anadarko and Arkoma basins. Its depth, maturity and produced-fluid mix differ between fairways. Cana-Woodford, SCOOP and STACK terminology may overlap Woodford development, but those commercial play names should not be treated as identical geographic datasets.
Because the formation crosses basin boundaries, well location and target interval matter more than an Oklahoma statewide total. EIA publishes a Woodford shale-gas series that can support formation-level gas context. Oil output and rig counts are left absent when no equally specific current series exists, preventing a national or state proxy from changing the meaning of the page.
