Understanding Tuscaloosa Marine Shale
The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale is a Late Cretaceous marine interval extending across parts of central Louisiana and southwestern Mississippi. It is generally deeper than many established U.S. shale plays and has presented drilling, pressure and completion challenges. The play remains distinct from the shallower Tuscaloosa conventional trend and from the Haynesville farther northwest.
Limited and episodic development makes old headline estimates particularly risky for this formation. EIA does not publish a current Tuscaloosa Marine-specific production or DPR series, and combining Louisiana and Mississippi totals would include unrelated fields.
